“I woke up feeling happy for the first time in a long while



It is thought that one in three people have at least a mild case of insomnia, a sleep condition that means you regularly find it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep.

For Kayleigh Spiteri, her insomnia was making her miserable: “I lost all interest in work, I just didn’t want to be there, and it was really getting me down. I stopped exercising because I had no energy and I spent most of my days walking around like a zombie.”

Kayleigh describes her insomnia as a continuous cycle, struggling to get to sleep, then worrying about not being able to sleep, causing exhaustion and anxiety throughout the day.

She said: “I started getting heart palpitations as a result of the anxiety and I feared the nights coming round as I knew I’d be laying there awake for hours.

“It really took its toll on me and I’d tried all the usual remedies such as lavender spray, having a relaxing bed-time routine and eating well, but nothing seemed to shake it.”

Feeling hopeless, Kayleigh went to her GP to help solve her endless nightmare: “I turned to my doctor for some support as I just couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. I was prescribed sleeping tablets which helped for a few days but as they’re highly addictive, I could only take them for a week or so.

“They felt really unnatural as the sedation came quickly and completely knocked me out but only for a couple of hours. As soon as I stopped taking them, the insomnia returned and I knew I needed to find a more permanent solution.”
