Matcha & CBD – is this a wellness match made in heaven?

Matcha Union co-founder, Louisa Birkhahn

Two friends who united over a shared love of CBD are now helping others find a sense of calm.

Wellness and lifestyle brand, Matcha Union, is built on a simple principle; connectivity.

Co-founders and friends, Louisa Birkhahn and Yureeka Yasuda lived on opposite sides of the world, but their shared love of the two natural supplements, CBD and Matcha, brought them together.

Louisa talks to Cannabis Health about sharing their union with the rest of the world and why wellness matters to them.

CH: Tell us about Matcha Union?

LB: Modern life is full of constant ups and downs, rapidly changing situations that attempt to move us out of our groove. We noticed that bringing together certain natural ingredients could help you find your groove back and be in tune with the inner you and consequently with the world around you.

MU is a global wellness and lifestyle brand with the mission to empower you through a natural and holistic approach to supplementing your day. Its core is based on the idea of union, between people and nature, creating a synergy that brings about positive change socially and environmentally.

CH: Can you share a bit of the personal story behind it?

LB: It’s the union of us, as two friends who share a love for the detoxifying green tea and found calm through CBD – particularly due to its anxiety reducing and sleep improving properties – in our two different but ultimately similar hectic lives in two different parts of the world.

This combination worked for both of us, so we wanted to share it beyond our personal “union”.

CH: Have you always been passionate about wellness?

LB: I grew up in Berlin, the artistic hotbed of Europe and soon began travelling and living extensively around the world. Whatever the destination, I found a way to connect with locals who share my spirit of embracing life by living an active and healthy lifestyle.

My first steps on the path to nutrition and wellness started in 2018 when I founded Tartine, an all-day dining concept in Shanghai, inspired by the healthy food cultures of Australia and California.

This was where I began developing a strong interest in learning about new ingredients and their effects on the body.

Yureeka is a certified tea sommelier born in Tokyo and raised in New York, so she brings a global outlook to the brand, alongside her personal appreciation for Japanese heritage. She is also a renowned cultural curator, art collector and published writer.

CH: What makes Matcha and CBD a winning combination?

LB: We see the two ingredients as complementary. They both share the ability to give incredible focus so they can be enjoyed individually –  in the morning and evening – but also together, such as the CBD Matcha Latte that boosts your focus while reducing anxiety at the same time.

CH: What sets Matcha Union apart from other brands on the market?

LB: Definitely our all round morning to evening concept. When you need a pick-me-up, our matcha is just the drink you’d need, but likewise in the evenings, when you need to unwind, our organic CBD oil is what will help you relax.

CH: What makes the MU CBD oil special?

LB: Our newly launched CBD range promises to stimulate feelings of relaxation and calm, promote a restful nights sleep and assist you in unwinding. The five percent and 15 percent CBD full spectrum oils are carefully formulated with hemp seed oil and cannabidiol sourced from certified organic hemp farms in the South of France.

It’s cold-pressed to a phytocomplex oil meaning that it retains plant matter including chlorophyll, cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenes that naturally occur within the plant. These natural compounds are what give MU CBD oil its true plant-green colour, light herbal taste and maximum anti-inflammatory properties.

CH: Why does wellness matter to you?

LB: Adapting wellness into our routines has helped us to get our groove back and be in tune with our inner selves and consequently with the world around us, despite everything that’s going on these days.

Only when we are in tune with ourselves, can we be in harmony with everything else.

We’re building a community to create positive change, and inviting people to be part of the union. As we grow the idea of community will become more and more apparent. We want to connect and create something bigger.
