IMPACT sponsors Jacob Mellish in Paddle Against Pollution fundraiser

IMPACT has stepped up to sponsor athlete Jacob Mellish in his paddle boarding fundraiser for Surfers Against Sewage.

Jacob will be paddling around 100km from Edinburgh to England over three to four days, later this month.

The expedition is to raise awareness of how polluted UK coastlines are, with the goal of raising £10,000 towards Surfers Against Sewage. 

Surfers Against Sewage are an amazing charity that educates and campaigns for cleaner seas and coastlines across the UK. As an island this affects everyone living in the country. 

According to Surfers Against Sewage over 200,000 discharges of untreated sewage was dumped into UK rivers and almost 200 into coastal bathing waters during the bathing season alone in 2019.

This sewage pollution is everything that we flush down the loo or wash down the drains.

Together with diffuse pollution, which is the run-off from agricultural, road, landfill and poor waste management, it gets dumped into our waters. This sewage is part of an emergency infrastructure termed; Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs), which, during periods of heavy rainfall is discharged inorder to stop sewage backup into our homes. With the growing population this system is being used more and more frequently and causing an environmental disaster.

• Chest infections
• Hepatitis
• E Coli
