Looking forward to a stack of pancakes later? Here’s how to add a little hemp to the mix and reap the nutritional benefits.

We all know how great hemp is for the environment, but it’s also rich in nutritional value too.

In fact, for centuries, hemp has been a traditional source of food, consumed in Europe and all over the world.

Hemp seeds grow in a brown kernel shell that contains a softer inside, often referred to as a ‘hemp heart.’

These hearts are a multi-functional ingredient that can be pressed into oil, added to salads or eaten as seeds and the leftover product can also be made into protein powder.

Hemp seeds are second only to the soybean for plant-based protein sources, while also being a source of essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6, fibre, vitamin E, vitamin B, and minerals like magnesium and iron.

Amino acids are essential for the creation and growth of our muscles, connective tissue and skin. It also provides a significant amount of energy for the body. Omega-3 and 6 work to fight depression and reduce heart disease markers.

Hemp oil, protein powder and flour also retain similar properties, making them a great addition to our diets.

As part of its ongoing mission to raise awareness about hemp and its enormous potential as a multipurpose crop, the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) created the Cooking with Hemp recipe book.

It is packed with ideas for using hemp in the kitchen, from adding hemp seeds to soups and smoothies to a drop of CBD in your chocolate brownies.

This simple recipe uses a hemp protein powder – which you can buy from all good health food stores, such as Holland and Barrett or Whole Foods – so your pancakes will be packed with goodness, while also tasting great.
