Cannabis Clinic Cardiff has announced it is joining the Grow Access Project, to help reduce cost-related barriers to cannabis prescriptions.

Launched by leading UK distributer Grow Pharma earlier this year, The Grow Access Project (GAP) aims to reduce cost-related barriers to accessing cannabis medicines on private prescription for patients in the UK.

It currently offers a reduced cost on certain ranges of medicines for patients on means-tested benefits and veterans of the UK Armed Forces.

As of today (Thursday 22 September) eligible patients at Cannabis Clinic Cardiff can benefit from the GAP cost reductions.

Cannabis Clinic Cardiff is one of around 20 cannabis-prescribing clinics in the UK.

Launched in November 2021, the team specialises in the prescribing of cannabis medicines for psychiatric conditions such as anxiety, depression and PTSD. It is currently the only prescribing clinic based in Wales, but provides virtual appointments to patients throughout the UK.

Lead clinician and consultant psychiatrist, Dr Dave Howells, commented: As a clinic providing a professional service for people with difficult to treat mental health problems, we understand the importance of quality, value and patient care. Our patients appreciate having access to the complete range of prescription cannabis in the UK and the expert guidance to navigate this evolving field of medicine.

“As a truly independent clinic, we are committed to matching patient needs with the right products at the best prices.  It is with this in mind that we are delighted to be joining the Grow Access Project, providing veterans and patients on low income benefits the opportunity to have prescriptions of high quality medications at a more affordable cost.”

Dr Howells leads a compassionate team that understands the complex interplay between mental health and cannabis use, both of which continue to be subject to societal stigma.

Cannabis Clinic Cardiff has quickly developed a reputation as being patient-focused, reflecting the ethos of CEO and clinic manager, Sam Ashton who forged the clinic with a deep understanding and respect for those seeking help.

“I wanted to give our patients the experience of belonging to a clinic that I would want for myself,” Ashton commented.

“As a medical patient who can personally attest to the benefits of prescription cannabis, I appreciate the courage needed to contact me and take those first few steps.  I will always try to find the best solution for the individual patient and support them in getting the help they need, from initial contact onwards. I know that providing the option of the Grow Access Project will be of great interest to many of our existing and future patients.”

Patients have responded well to the approach, recommending the clinic to others.

One patient (who wished to remain anonymous) said: Everything is going so well, and I wanted to thank [Cannabis Clinic Cardiff] for giving me great service every time I contact you. I literally have no bad words to say”.

While another added: “I just wanted to say again how grateful I am for all your team’s help and support. Trying to purchase cannabis to medicate with has been a massive source of stress and anxiety for me for a long time and this has been such a massive relief and your team has made me feel welcome, respected and heard throughout.”

Alex Fraser, patient access lead at Grow Pharma

The clinic continues to offer a personalised approach to psychiatric consultations and is committed to keeping patients supported and informed throughout their journey, noting patient needs can require a bespoke approach.

Prescribers at Cannabis Clinic Cardiff work with multiple pharmacies across the country and are the only UK clinic to offer both GAP and Project Twenty21 discounts, which highlights their commitment to patients.

Alex Fraser, patient access lead at Grow Pharma said: “We love working with clinics like Cardiff. They have a real passion for their work and a dedication to learning about the finer nuances around cannabis medicines, how they work for patients and implementing this into their practice. The team at clearly care about their patients.”
