Cannabis Health has partnered with leading experts at the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society (MCCS) to bring its first educational event for healthcare professionals to the UK later this year.
The Cannabis Health Symposium, taking place at Conway Hall in London on 25 November, 2025, will welcome some of the pioneers in the prescribing of cannabis-based medicines in the UK to share their insights and clinical experience.
The CPD-accredited event, which will provide education on the role of medical cannabis in a range of chronic conditions, is designed to equip more clinicians with the confidence and tools to integrate these medicines into their practice to increase access and improve care for thousands of patients.
While over 60,000 patients are now being prescribed CBPMs in the UK, only around 160 specialist consultants are actively prescribing. As awareness of medical cannabis grows, clinicians play a fundamental role in enabling more patients to potentially benefit from these treatments.
Yet despite a growing awareness of the medicinal properties of cannabis, and the role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in numerous chronic conditions, the ECS is still not widely taught in UK medical schools, creating a significant knowledge gap in the wider healthcare sector.
The MCCS now has over 500 members and provides independent education, training and peer support for healthcare professionals with an interest in the field of cannabis medicine.
As event partners, MCCS members, and some of the earliest adopters of medical cannabis, will share their insights and clinical experience after almost seven years of treating patients with CBPMs.
Among other topics, experts will present evidence for the use of CBPMs in indications such as psychiatry, neurodivergence, dementia and neurodegenerative conditions, and women’s health.
There will also be the opportunity to hear first-hand patient perspectives about the real-world impact of these medicines.
Alongside content designed to develop and expand the knowledge-base of existing prescribers, the MCCS will deliver workshops throughout the day aimed at those who are new to cannabis-based medicine, but interested in how CBPMs could enhance their practice.
A “significant step forward” for “vital” education
The Symposium had been dubbed a “significant step forward” in bringing “vital” clinician education to the sector, by MCCS chair and one of the first prescribers of cannabis-based medicines in the UK, Professor Mike Barnes.
“I am looking forward to this conference which has been badly needed for some time,” commented Barnes, who will also present the organisation’s Good Practice Guidelines, which have been developed to give doctors and regulators confidence in complaint prescribing.
“Clinicians need to meet face-to-face to learn from each other, listen to experts and gain confidence in their practice. Clinician education is vital in this sector where there is so much to learn and frankly so many prejudices to overcome.”
He added: “I know this will be a significant step forward for clinicians and thus eventually benefit many thousands of people with long term disabling conditions.”
