New poll results show that 75 percent of Americans support the legalisation of cannabis, either at federal or state level.
Only 25 percent of voters said cannabis should be illegal everywhere in the US, according to the poll conducted by Hill-HarrisX.
But voters were split on whether it should be legalised nationwide or if states should be able to decide individually.
Thirty-eight percent of registered voters in the survey said the federal government should legalise cannabis, while 37 percent of respondents said it should be decided at the state level.
More Democrats and independents supported legalising cannabis across the country, at 48 percent and 38 percent, respectively.
The majority of Republicans (39 percent) said the decision should be made at the state level.
The poll was conducted online among 1,882 registered voters from 24 – 26 March.
It was published on Wednesday 31 March on the same day New York became the 15th state to legalise cannabis for adult recreational use.
The passing of the bill will allow adults over the age of 21 to purchase cannabis in a regulated market and allow individuals to grow up to six plants for personal use.
It is being heralded as a huge breakthrough for the cannabis sector and the latest step in America’s long move towards nationwide reform.
