A man who lives with several neurological conditions, including Tourette’s syndrome, has shared the profound effects of his medical cannabis prescription.
The 31-year-old was severely injured in a car accident in 2018, and the head trauma he suffered left him with several debilitating chronic conditions, including functional neurological disorder, Tourette’s syndrome and fibromyalgia.
Overnight Jim went from being a healthy 29-year-old to being unable to walk or communicate properly and suffering dozens of fits and seizures a day.
He was prescribed “thousands of pills” to manage his symptoms – all of which made little improvement – and he lost hope until a friend recommended he try cannabis. The effects were “life-changing”, he told us.
Now Jim, who has a legal prescription for cannabis-based medicines, has shared a video of him medicating to show the profound and instantaneous effects it has on his conditions.
“It’s pretty exhausting and painful,” Jim says in the video of the daily shakes and tics he endures as a result of his condition.
But after vaporising just a small amount of cannabis, he instantly stops shaking, is calm and able to speak in full sentences.
“The relief that comes over my body is hard to describe,” he says.
“It’s just instantaneous relief, the transformation in my ability to speak after just a few puffs…it makes me emotional.
“Now I’m fully medicated, I can feel my body relaxed, I’m feeling normal again.”
Jim has shared the video to raise awareness of the effects medical cannabis has on his life and to highlight the injustice that so few patients can access it on the NHS.
“Cannabis gives me the ability to love, laugh and live every single day,” he adds.
“I need to access this medication on the NHS, it is life changing for me and it’s not fair that I am still struggling to access it.”
